Just wanted to note that installing windows 7 RC x86 on an Acer Aspire 9410 was as easy as pie. My Mother-in-Law brought me this thing cause she wanted it redone, as her OS was really slow. She was previously using XP Media Center Edition.

I installed Windows 7 RC on it and the only drivers that I needed to manually add was the "Media Card Reader" which came up as "Mass Storage Device" with the :!: symbol on it. I went to the ACER website and downloaded the drivers for Vista and all was done.

If you have one of those laptops, or know someone with such a laptop, I would recommend Win 7 RC without hesitation

Hey, I don't know if you check this forum regulary but i have a huge problem with My aspire 9410.
Can you explain me how you installed win7?
Because I partitionated the c disc but can't install an other version of windows. Keep giving me the troubles because it's the wrong key. I tried the key at the back of my aspire and that worked with an xp pro cd but I can't get true the activation screen. My keys and cd's are original ones... Do I have to install 1 particular version and which one then?
    Thanks in front!

The earlier posts in this thread relate to when Microsoft was still testing Windows 7.

However, it was officially released in October 2009 and the only legal way to installl it now is to purchase your own copy.

Presumably the key you are referring to is the OEM licence attached to your computer, unfortunately that will only work for the operating system that came with the system.

What you will need to do is purchase an upgrade version of Windows 7, such as Home Premium. Then, with Windows XP still on the hard drive, insert the upgrade DVD and follow the prompts. Or, you can pay extra and get full copy of Windows 7 and perform a clean installation, which is the recommended method as some people encounter errors when performing the upgrade.

The key on the bottom of your laptop only works with the Windows XP that was factory installed on your laptop. Even if you borrow a friend's Windows XP disk, your key will not work with any other installation disk.

Tnx already for the quick reply.
So when i buy a full version of win7 I can install that on an empty HDD?
I can't upgrade because I already formatted my C drive...
And what about the the installation wizard?
Because I tried to install win xp pro version 2002 but that didn't work. I had to insert the key from the bottom of my laptop.

And then when I had to activate there was no number I could use when i was calling to windows (call center).
So now it wil work? Just install win7 on the empty c Hdd, copy the files, follow the wizard en entering the key that came with win7 box?
    hope this will work.

Yes, you CAN do an upgrade install because you owned XP already on the laptop. It's not necessary for XP to be on the hard drive to do the install.

A LOT of people have done it that way. Plus you'll save some money too. The upgrade discs are exactly the same as the full retail discs, its the key that is different.

You CAN do a clean or "custom" install as Windows 7 calls it. Just boot the laptop with the Windows 7 install disc in the DVD drive on your laptop. Be sure the DVD drive is set as the 1st Boot Device in the BIOS.

Go to Paul Thurrott's website to see how to do a clean install from upgrade media.

Click here: Clean Install Windows 7 with Upgrade Media

I have done several upgrade installs for friends using this method and it works every time. Never even had to use Method #2. Method #1 always worked.
